This January 26th, we commemorate World Environmental Education Day, a key date reminding us that the most powerful tool to address the global climate crisis is knowledge and collective awareness.
In a world where ecological challenges are increasingly evident, environmental education emerges not as an option, but as an imperative necessity.
A Historic Origin
The choice of this date is not accidental. It originates in 1975 with the publication of the Belgrade Charter, a document arising from the International Workshop on Environmental Education. There, the fundamental principles and guidelines for environmental education within the framework of United Nations programs were established, marking a milestone by formalizing the need for a pedagogy oriented towards sustainability.
Beyond the Classroom
Often, there is a misconception that environmental education is limited to simple actions like "planting a tree" or separating waste. While these actions are valuable, the concept is much deeper.
It is a dynamic and participatory process that seeks to awaken awareness in people regarding environmental problems, identify their structural causes, and understand our individual and collective responsibility in the search for solutions.
To achieve real impact, environmental education relies on three fundamental pillars:
Awareness: Helping individuals and social groups acquire sensitivity towards the environment.
Attitude: Promoting social values and a deep interest that drives active participation in its protection.
Participation: Developing a sense of responsibility to take urgent action.
Environmental education does not end in academic institutions; it is practiced at home, at work, and in every consumption decision. Caring for the environment is everyone's responsibility, and we are convinced that true change begins with knowledge."
