In a world where "disposable" has become a dangerous norm, an Argentine initiative is demonstrating that the best waste is the one that is never generated. We are talking about Qero Ecovasos, the project that challenged the "throwaway culture" and today stands as a fundamental barrier against plastic pollution in our oceans.

The Origin: A Solution to the Tide of Trash
The idea was born in 2013, when its founders noticed a recurring scene after every festival or massive event in Argentina: a "sea" of disposable plastic cups covering the ground. While reuse systems already existed in Europe, single-use plastic remained the undisputed king in our region.
Thus, Qero emerged with a disruptive yet logical premise: to replace the linear economy (buy, use, dispose) with a circular one (use, wash, reuse).
How Does the System Work?
The model is ingeniously simple and relies on shared responsibility:
The Deposit System: At events and festivals, the user pays a small deposit for their reusable cup.
Use and Exchange: During the event, they can swap their dirty cup for a clean one as many times as they like at no extra cost.
Closing the Loop: At the end, the user has two options: return the cup and get their money back (reintroducing the cup into the system to be washed and reused) or take it home as a souvenir to continue using it, thus avoiding the consumption of disposable cups in their daily life.
Real Impact: Less Plastic, More Life
The impact of this initiative is measurable and compelling. Since its inception, the system has managed to avoid the disposal of over 300 million disposable cups.
This is vital for the health of our aquatic ecosystems. It is estimated that 8 million tons of plastic end up in the oceans every year, breaking down into microplastics that are ingested by marine fauna and, eventually, by us. By attacking the problem at the root (waste generation), initiatives like Ecovasos not only clean up cities but actively protect marine biodiversity, preventing tons of polypropylene from ending up floating in the sea.
